Twenty fire engines and 120 firefighters were battling a blaze on the roof of a block of flats on Creek Road, Deptford, on Tuesday afternoon.
London Fire Brigade said they were called at 1:03 p.m., while the Evening Standard reports videos have shown large plumes of smoke emanating from the building as of 4:15 p m.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and there have been no reports of injuries as of yet.
Around 13 people left the building before fire engines arrived, the London Fire Brigade said in a statement.
Station Commander Ian Smith, who is at the scene, told the Evening Standard: “This is an intense fire located in the roof of the building and fire crews are working hard in challenging conditions. We've increased the number of fire engines because of the need for more firefighters in breathing apparatus."
The Guardian reports that residents told the Press Association that building work was taking place on the block of flats at the time, with scaffolding visible around the walls of the building.
